Sandhill Cranes & Waterfowl of Nebraska’s Platte River

March 18-23, 2007

NEW! A second tour has been added: March 25-30, 2007

Overview

Every spring nearly 500,000 Sandhill Cranes gather to gain energy from the fertile lands along the Platte River area of Nebraska. In one of the most amazing spectacles in all North America, the cranes can be heard and seen along an 80 mile stretch of the river during the early spring months. In addition to the cranes, 10 million ducks and geese also gather to use the Platte and the neighboring Rainwater Basin wetlands. The abundant birds also attract many predators, including birds of prey. About 1,000 Bald Eagles, and a few other raptors can be found throughout the area. We'll travel throughout the Platte River area and the Rainwater Basin on this tour, taking in the marvelous sights and sounds of spring birds. There are several leks where, at dawn’s first light, Greater Prairie Chicken perform their courtship display and we’ll be sure to visit one of these. We'll also watch for north bound early spring migrants, such shorebirds and land birds. In some years we have seen small numbers of Baird's Sandpipers along the Platte, and Red-headed Woodpeckers near Omaha. Lingering Harris's Sparrows are usually seen.

Logistics
This is a 6-day, 5-night tour in the Omaha and Platte River areas of Nebraska on March 18-23, with arrival and departure from Omaha.  The tour is limited to 6 participants. Cost is $1095.00 per person for 2-3 participants, which drops to $995.00 per person if there are at least 4 participants, all based on double occupancy. Cost includes: full-sized car or van rental and all fuel and tolls (and I will do all the driving, including pick-up and drop-off at the airport), meals, lodging, and guiding for birds and natural history.  We will plan on eating lunch at small sandwich shops every day. We will have dinners and breakfast close to the motel or possibly en route to and from the motel.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival day in Omaha and transfer to lodgings. Some birding may be possible, depending upon your arrival time. There will be a late afternoon and early evening outing to Lake Manawa to look for Bald Eagles, waterfowl, and displaying American Woodcock. At  dinner, we'll have introductions and orientation. Overnight in Omaha.

Day 2: Morning birding in the Omaha area, at nearby DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge to look for Harris's Sparrows and Snow Geese, followed by a drive to Grand Island. As we get close to the Platte River, We'll take time to watch Sandhill Cranes foraging and interacting, and in the evening we will see large flocks of Sandhill Cranes flying in to roost on the Platte River, vocalizing all the while. We'll also keep an eye out for large gatherings of ducks and geese.  Overnight in Grand Island.

Day 3-4: During these days we will explore the abundant bird life found throughout south-central Nebraska. Blinds that afford close looks at the cranes have been reserved for sunrise and sunset viewing. Weather permitting, there should be some good photo opportunities.

In the Rainwater Basin, we’ll look through the flocks of Snow Geese, Ross’s Geese, and Greater White-fronted Geese. With luck, we will also find Eagles, hawks and falcons to keep us busy working on our identification skills, as many raptors are attracted by the migrating waterfowl.

On one morning, we’ll visit a Greater Prairie Chicken lek where the males perform their courtship display, stomping their feet, and making towering leaps and resonant booming noises from inflated yellow-orange air sacs along the sides of their necks. We’ll also look for Harris’s Sparrow, and Lapland Longspur – northern breeders that overwinter in this area. Nights in Grand Island.

Day 5: In the morning, we will observe the cranes for one last time before heading back to Omaha, keeping an eye out for any other interesting birds and wildlife that we may encounter. Overnight in Omaha.

Day 6: The tour officially ends.
